Oculus Pavilion
The Oculus is a transformative urban device that adapts to various urban scenarios; from the Architecture Biennial, to an active Lakefront kiosk, to an architectural image during the winter months. The design proposes an inversion of the relationship between kiosk and public, by inviting the user to occupy rather than merely engaging with its frontage. The kiosk is designed for the contemporary mobile food and retail industry which comes fully equipped with its own services, such as a food truck or coffee van. What the vendor lacks is a destination or event to anchor into. The kiosk responds to this condition of temporarily within an urban situation. The kiosk has a rubber coated base plinth with an inflatable structure acting as the main shelter. The center of the kiosk is an oculus, covered by an acrylic lens that frames the view of the sky which itself is temporal.
